What happens when a Euro 4 or higher rated Diesel engine runs on high sulfur, non-Diesel, or jet fuel?
  • The catalytic converter will become cloaked with contaminants.
  • The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler can develop an acid build-up which will lead to corrosion.
  • Water could enter to the engine and worst case, result in engine failure.
  • The engine ECU will recognize EGR cooler corrosion and build-up, causing error codes to diagnose other problems.
  • Injector and high-pressure pump degradation. Fuel pressure deviation resulting in engine limp home condition (reduced performance)
The FGFS Ford Panther Diesel Engine to Jet Fuel capability conversion consists of the following steps:
  • Recalibration of the ECU to operate on different fuel grades, including kerosine-based products.
  • Replacing the catalytic converter with a non-catalytic muffler system.
  • Closing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (EGR) prevents return exhaust from entering the EGR cooler.
  • Software updates to deactivate the EGR sensor and prevent the occurrence of error codes due to the EGR blockage.
  • Loading updated calibration to Ford Global Aftersales System so that it is included in any Authorized Ford Service.
  • Lastly, a hot climate option involves fitting a fuel cooler to operate on F63, JP8, or similar low-viscosity fuels.

First, on Wednesday, Matthew said they enjoyed the exhibition hall and talking with several modifiers, suppliers, and current customers. In short, the exhibit hall had commercial vehicles and related equipment from more than 500 work truck industry exhibitors. The Work Truck Week’s about page says, “For more than 20 years, the people who design, build, use and maintain the work trucks and equipment the world relies on having gathered every March. To see the industry’s latest products and technology, learn from one another, and discuss how to improve the future.”

After that, on Thursday, we attended an educational session on Global Work Truck Market Trends and Impacts, presented by Tim Cambell, Managing Director, Campbells Consultancy. “It was an exciting discussion about the commercial industry moving to Electric Vehicles and alternative fuel sources,” Zach explained. The WTS22 re-cap describes the event as “Attendees gained a unique perspective on developing trends in the global commercial vehicle market. Including regulations, technological advancements, and other factors that may impact the North American work truck industry.”

Tim Cambell believes that it is important for fleet owners to start engaging with zero-emission transportation. Consequently, they’ll make sure they are on the right side of the transition when the time comes. For instance, the U.S. has deployed 1,215 zero-emissions vehicles Class 2b through Class 8 as of December. That number could increase more than ten times within ten years, according to a study by Calstart. “It’s upside-down residuals. Diesels are cheap to buy expensive to run. Electric vehicles are expensive to buy but cheap to run. We’re turning the TCO [total cost of ownership] model on its back.” Campbell said.

In addition, Zach and Matthew also enjoyed checking out Knapheide‘s booth, which included the Steel 16k FT-LB Mechanic Truck, with new durable Master Lock handles, 22″ deep compartments, and a 50″ wide cargo area with D-ring tie-down on the floor, pictured below. The next-generation and next-level Ford Ranger Raptor has arrived. Built to dominate in the desert, master the mountains and rule everywhere in between, the second-generation Ranger Raptor raises the off-road performance bar as a pick-up built for true enthusiasts.

Developed by Ford Performance, the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor is the ultimate performance derivative of the all-new Ford Ranger. With smarter technology controlling tougher, next‑generation hardware, Ranger Raptor blends raw power with mechanical and technical precision to create the most advanced Ranger ever.

“We’ve really focused on delivering a genuine performance truck with the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor,” said Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer for Ranger Raptor. “It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and it’s the toughest Ranger we’ve ever made.”

European Ranger enthusiasts have special reason to celebrate as the all-new Ranger Raptor is the first model from the Next-Gen Ranger line-up to be launched in Europe, with customer deliveries starting in the final quarter of 2022.

The Raptor’s imminent arrival in Europe is marked by an all-action stunt video, 3 which shows the vehicle leaping from a cargo plane in order to arrive on time for its European launch.

More power to play

The biggest news for performance fans is the introduction of an all-new twin-turbo 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine tuned by Ford Performance to produce a targeted 288 PS and 491 Nm of torque. 1

The twin-turbo 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 engine boasts a compacted graphite-iron cylinder block, which is around 75 per cent stronger and up to 75 per cent stiffer than the iron used in traditional castings. Ford Performance ensured the engine delivers immediate response to throttle inputs, and a race-bred anti-lag system similar to that first seen on the Ford GT road car and Focus ST enables rapid delivery of boost on demand.

The new anti-lag system, available in Baja mode, keeps the turbochargers spinning for up to three seconds after the driver backs off the throttle, allowing for faster resumption of acceleration out of corners or through the gears when the driver steps back on the accelerator. In addition, the engine is programmed with an individual turbocharging boost profile for each of the advanced 10-speed automatic transmission’s gears, for optimised performance.

“The 3.0-litre engine brings a different dynamic to the Ranger Raptor that will satisfy even the most hardcore performance enthusiast,” Burn said. “The acceleration and raw performance of the new powertrain leave you grinning from ear-to-ear.”

Ranger Raptor’s new powertrain delivers effortless acceleration on gravel, dirt, mud and sand. To match this comprehensive performance, an electronically‑controlled active exhaust system amplifies the engine note in four selectable modes enabling Ranger Raptor to adapt its vocal character.

Drivers can choose their preferred engine sound by pressing a button on the steering wheel, or by selecting a drive mode that uses one of the following settings:

  • Quiet – prioritises quietness over performance and sound to keep the peace with neighbours on early mornings
  • Normal – intended for everyday use, this profile offers an exhaust note with presence while not being too loud for street use. This profile is applied by default to Normal, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, and Rock Crawl drive modes
  • Sport – offers a louder and more dynamic note
  • Baja – the most striking exhaust profile in both volume and note, in Baja mode the exhaust behaves more like a straight-through system. Intended for off-road use only.

The current 2.0-litre EcoBlue bi‑turbo diesel engine will continue to be available in the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor from 2023, with further details available closer to launch.

Hardware for heavy hitters

The Next-Gen Ranger Raptor has a unique chassis when compared to the all-new Ranger. A series of Raptor-specific mounts and reinforcements for elements including the C-pillar, load box and spare wheel, as well as unique frames for the jounce bumper, shock tower and rear shock bracket all combine to ensure Next-Gen Ranger Raptor can handle punishing off-road conditions.

A high-performance off-roader like the Ranger Raptor needs the running gear to match, so Ford engineers completely redesigned the suspension. All-new tough yet lightweight aluminium upper and lower control arms, long‑travel front and rear suspension and a refined Watt’s link rear end have been designed to deliver more control across rough terrain at high speed.

“The suspension upgrades in the Ranger Raptor make the most of the new FOX® Live Valve dampers. The suspension adapts in real-time to enable exceptional on-road body control while absorbing corrugations and bigger ruts off-road with ease, ensuring maximum control and performance,” Burn said.

The next-generation FOX® 2.5-inch Live Valve internal bypass shock absorbers feature cutting-edge control technology offering position-sensitive damping capability. These shock absorbers are the most sophisticated ever fitted to Ranger Raptor and are filled with Teflon™‑infused oil that reduces friction by around 50 per cent compared to those on the outgoing vehicle.

While the hardware is FOX®, the tuning and development work was carried out by Ford Performance using a mixture of computer-aided engineering and real-world testing. Everything from adjusting the spring rates to setting the ride height, valve tuning and honing the ride zones was performed to create the perfect balance between comfort, control, stability and traction on- and off-road.

Linked to Ranger Raptor’s revised selectable drive modes, 2 the Live Valve internal bypass system has been developed to provide better on-road comfort and off-road ride quality both at high and low speed.

In addition to working with the drive modes, the system works in the background to prepare Next-Gen Ranger Raptor for different conditions. As the shocks compress, different zones within the bypass system give exactly the amount of support needed for the travel being used, and work in reverse as the shocks rebound back to full height.

To provide protection against severe bottom outs, race-proven FOX® Bottom-Out Control provides maximum damping force in the last 25 per cent of shock travel. Similarly, the system can stiffen the rear dampers to prevent Ranger Raptor from squatting under hard acceleration, improving vehicle stability. With the shocks providing the right amount of damping force at every position, Ranger Raptor stays planted on both the road and track.

Ranger Raptor’s ability to tackle rough terrain is further enhanced with some serious underbody protection. The front bash plate is almost double the size of the standard Next‑Gen Ranger’s unit and is made from 2.3 mm-thick high-strength steel. This plate, combined with the engine undershield and transfer case shield, is designed to protect key components such as the radiator, steering system, front crossmember, engine sump and front differential.

Twin rated tow hooks at the front and rear provide flexible recovery options while driving off‑road; the design facilitates access to one of the tow hooks if the other is buried, as well as enabling the use of balance straps during snatch recoveries in deep sand or thick mud.

All-terrain control

For the first time, Ranger Raptor gets an advanced full-time four-wheel drive system with an all‑new electronically‑controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, combined with front and rear locking differentials – a valuable feature for hardcore off-road enthusiasts.

“While Ranger Raptor was inspired by desert racers, it’s also a supremely capable overlanding vehicle. Out of the box we’ve created an off-road vehicle that you don’t need to modify to get you where you need to go and back again safely,” Burn said.

Helping Next-Gen Ranger Raptor handle anything from smooth roads to mud and ruts, plus everything in between, are seven selectable drive modes, 2 including the off-road oriented Baja mode, which configures the vehicle’s electronic systems for ultimate performance during high-speed off‑roading.

“We really wanted Baja mode to be the ultimate expression of the high-speed off‑road capability,” Burn said. “It’s a feature at the core of what the Ranger Raptor customer expects.”

Each selectable drive mode adjusts a number of elements from engine and transmission to ABS sensitivity and calibration, traction and stability controls, exhaust valve actuation, steering and throttle response. In addition, the gauges, vehicle information and colour themes on the instrument cluster and centre touchscreen change with the selected drive mode. 2

On-road

  • Normal – designed for comfort and fuel efficiency
  • Sport – more responsive for spirited on-road driving
  • Slippery – for more confident driving on slippery or uneven surfaces

Off-road

  • Rock crawl – for optimum control in very low speed driving over extreme rocky and uneven terrain
  • Sand – optimises gearchanges and power delivery for progress in sand and deep snow
  • Mud/Ruts – for maximum grip during launch and maintaining vehicle momentum
  • Baja – sets all systems to maximum attack for peak high-speed off-road performance

Next-Gen Ranger Raptor also features Trail Control™, which is like cruise control for off‑roading. 2 The driver simply selects a set speed below 32 km/h and the vehicle will manage its acceleration and braking while the driver concentrates on steering through difficult terrain.

Tough and athletic

Matching the enhanced capability of Ranger Raptor is an all-new look that builds on Next‑Gen Ranger’s bold, strong style. Flared wheel arches and C-clamp headlight designs emphasise the pick‑up’s width, while bold F-O-R-D lettering on the grille and the tough separate bumper add more visual muscle.

“Everything designed for the Ranger Raptor is there for a reason,” said Dave Dewitt, Ranger Raptor exterior design manager. “We’re communicating what Raptor can do just by the way it looks.”

The matrix LED headlights with LED daytime running lights push Ranger Raptor’s lighting performance to new levels, featuring predictive curve lights, glare-free high beam and auto dynamic levelling to deliver better visibility for Ranger Raptor drivers and other road users.

The flared fenders cover muscular 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Raptor-exclusive performance all‑terrain tyres. Functional vents, aero features and tough, grippy cast-aluminium side steps help enhance the look and functionality of the truck. At the rear, LED taillights provide a signature styling link to the front, while the Precision Grey rear bumper features an integrated step pad and towbar that is tucked up high to avoid compromising the departure angle.

Inside, the theme continues to emphasise Ranger Raptor’s off-road performance and high‑energy nature. The cabin features all-new, jet fighter-inspired sports seats in the front and rear to increase comfort and offer more support during high-speed cornering.

The Code Orange accents on the instrument panel, trim and seats are mirrored by Ranger Raptor’s ambient lighting, which bathes the interior in an amber glow. A premium leather sports heated steering wheel with thumb swells, on-centre marking and cast-magnesium paddle shifters completes the sporty feel.

Occupants will also benefit from the latest digital technology; the high‑tech cabin features a 12.4‑inch all-digital cluster and 12-inch centre touchscreen boasting Ford’s new-generation SYNC 4A® connectivity and entertainment system 4 that delivers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ compatibility at no extra cost. 5 A 10-speaker B&O® sound system 6 provides the soundtrack to your next adventure. 

Part of the Ford Performance family

The roots of the Raptor name lie in North America, where Ford has used it on high‑performance pick-up trucks and utility vehicles since the first-generation F-150 SVT Raptor, which was optimised for high-speed off-road performance. The Ford Performance-developed Ranger Raptor expanded the Raptor badge to other global markets in 2018, including to a new audience of hardcore off‑road truck fans in Europe.

More recently, Ford Performance has announced the Bronco Raptor performance SUV and limited-edition Bronco DR desert racer in North America. “We knew that customers would expect improved performance with the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor, but I’m not sure they’re really expecting the enormous leap we’ve made. It’s a seriously fun truck to drive and I think the raw performance is going to blow them away,” Burn said.

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA, November 1, 2022 – Ford announced today that a Next-Generation Ranger Raptor will be its latest off-roading vehicle to tackle the SCORE International Baja 1000 – one of the toughest off-road races in the world. The Ranger Raptor will be racing on a low-carbon biofuel, demonstrating the potential of these fuels in the most demanding environments.

Ford Performance worked with Australia’s Kelly Racing to build the Baja-ready Ranger Raptor and U.S.-based Lovell Racing to develop and race the truck at Baja, which begins on Nov. 18.  Lovell Racing, led by multi-time off-road champion and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Brad Lovell, is one of Ford Performance’s key off-road teams.

Ranger has long been a global icon for Ford and this vehicle was built and tested in Australia before being brought over to the U.S. for final development and testing before the endurance race.

“By entering this event, we’re building on the hundreds of thousands of kilometers of development testing and pushing the Ranger Raptor to new extremes,” said Brian Novak, Off-Road Motorsports Supervisor, Ford Performance.

“The Baja 1000 is a demanding event and a well-known proving ground for off-road vehicles,” he added. “We are excited to compete in this extreme event with Ranger Raptor.”

The Baja 1000, held on the Baja California Peninsula, is considered one of the world’s most prestigious off-road races, attracting competitors from around the globe eager to take on its miles of treacherous desert terrain, steep drops and tough climbs.

In the past, both the F-150 Raptor and Ford Bronco have successfully raced at Baja. Whether it was a stock 2017 F-150 Raptor finishing on the podium before driving an additional 400 miles home, the Bronco R race prototype’s development and verification of the current production Bronco or even hailing all the way back to the legendary 1969 overall win, there’s hearty history at play for Ford trucks.

Ford Performance believes the Ranger Raptor is up for the challenge. It is built to the rules of SCORE’s stock class, which are meant to show off the capability of the stock street trucks.

The Ranger Raptor will use Shell’s one-third blend of biofuel – with its mix of ethanol and bionaphtha.

“Demonstrating low-carbon fuels in performance settings like the Baja 1000 can help bring biofuels and other clean energy technologies to scale more quickly, and help to make them more available and affordable for everyone,” said Cynthia Williams, Global Director of Sustainability, Compliance and Homologation at Ford.

Ford is working to achieve carbon neutrality globally across its vehicles, operations and supply chain no later than 2050 and to reach science-based interim targets by 2035.  As Ford launches electrified versions of its most popular nameplates, the company continues to research and develop alternative fuel options across all of its vehicles, including performance racing, to provide customers with efficient, low-carbon alternatives. Alternative fuel vehicles can reduce GHG emissions compared to conventional fuel equivalents on a well-to-wheels basis, which includes emissions from both producing and consuming the fuels.

All three generations of F-150 Raptor have been inspired by the extreme desert-racing trophy trucks that compete in the Baja 1000. Designed and engineered by Ford Performance, the 2023 F-150 Raptor R is the closest yet to delivering this type of performance.

The heart of Raptor R

The heart of Raptor R is a new 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that delivers 700 horsepower and 640 lb.-ft. of torque to give it incredible desert-running power. Ford Performance enlisted the most powerful engine in its lineup – previously seen in the Mustang Shelby GT500® – optimizing it for Raptor-level off-road performance and Built Ford Tough® durability. The result is the most torque-dense supercharged V8 yet in a production pickup.

Ford Performance recalibrated this V8 engine’s supercharger and installed a new pulley to optimize its power for off-road use, increasing torque delivery at the low-end and mid-range. These changes help Raptor R offer more performance at the speeds where customers spend most of their time driving.

To maintain the extreme off-road durability the Raptor brand is known for, Ford Performance upgraded the original engine’s exhaust manifolds to a cast stainless steel design, including a unique oil cooler and filter, plus a deeper oil pan enabling it to tackle aggressive grades while keeping the engine oil cool. To help the engine breathe better, air intake volume is increased 66% via a wider air intake inlet and a higher-flow, higher-efficiency conical air filter.

Built Ford Tough to conquer the desert

F-150 Raptor is about more than going fast – it must conquer brutal off-road environments. Its capability and durability comes from more than a decade of Ford expertise in engineering and torture testing high-performance trucks. Ford Performance upgraded the base truck’s transmission and driveline to help ensure Raptor R can smoothly handle what this V8 can throw at it.

Raptor R delivers a 10-speed SelectShift® transmission with improved calibration. The truck features a new front axle with a more robust, higher-strength carrier casting and an aluminum-ribbed structural cover to manage the powertrain’s added torque, as well as a unique larger-diameter aluminum driveshaft. A new, specially tuned torque converter with heavy-duty turbine damper and four-pinion rear output assembly makes the truck even better equipped to transfer torque and provide a smoother powertrain feel when driving both on- and off-road.

Drivers get even more control over how their Raptor R expresses its additional power, courtesy of a unique dual exhaust system with a true pass-through muffler and active valve system, with modes for Normal, Sport, Quiet and Baja. These can be adjusted in the MyMode™ feature, allowing drivers to customize multiple settings – including drive, steering, suspension modes and others – and save one as a single mode easily accessed with the press of the “R” button on the steering wheel.

If the heart of Raptor R is the supercharged V8, the soul remains its incredibly capable suspension. The five-link rear suspension features extra-long trailing arms to better maintain axle position on rough terrain, a Panhard rod and 24-inch coil springs – all optimized for outstanding stability while traversing desert terrain at high speeds. Advanced FOX Live Valve shocks are tuned to balance ride quality and roll control on- and off-road. These electronically controlled dampers use suspension height sensors and other sensors to monitor terrain conditions independently, hundreds of times a second, while adjusting suspension tuning accordingly. Wheel travel of 13 inches in front and 14.1 inches in back facilitates Raptor R’s ability to traverse sand and rocks with outstanding capability.

“We’ve heard our customers demanding the sound and power of a V8 back in Raptor,” said Widmann. “That’s not something we were going to rush. This supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is the ideal fusion of high-density power paired with the third generation Raptor’s all-new rear suspension and shocks to deliver a one-two punch that goes far beyond the sum of its parts.”

Each drive mode is tuned to account for the added power of the supercharged V8, including an optimized Baja mode for maximum performance and control in high-speed off-roading. A 5% increase in the front spring rate helps maintain comfortable ride quality, while Raptor R boasts class-leading* 13.1-inch ground clearance and standard class-exclusive* 37-inch tires straight from the factory for improved obstacle clearing.

Iconic Raptor™ styling is taken to the next level

The most powerful Raptor yet takes the off-road truck’s purpose-built design legacy up a notch, with unique styling that further drives home its supercharged capability. A larger, more aggressively styled power dome on the hood sits nearly 1 inch taller than on the base Raptor, helping extract warm air from underneath. Iconic F O R D grille, bumpers and fender flares painted black underscore its menacing looks.

“Raptor R is visually designed like a desert predator to catch the attention of Raptor customers and off-road enthusiasts,” said Tom Liu, Raptor R lead designer. “There are details big and small – from the more aggressive hood air extractor to the Code Orange ‘R’ badges – that visually communicate next level off-road performance under the Raptor R banner.”

Ford Performance-exclusive Code Orange accents include a unique “R” badge on the grille, power dome and tailgate. A special graphics package on the rear fenders feature a unique design that mirrors the harsh, cracked desert earth, reinforcing the type of environment Raptor R is built to conquer.

That aggressive feel carries over to a black interior. Standard Recaro® seats sport a combination of black leather and Alcantara® suede – cleverly placed for added grip when the terrain gets nasty. Genuine carbon fiber adorns the doors, media bin door and upper parts of the instrument panel, featuring a unique tri-axial weave designed to convey Raptor R’s combination of performance, toughness and durability.

BANGKOK, 8 December 2021 – Ford Motor Company today showcased the modernization of its Thailand manufacturing operations with a US$900 million (THB 28 billion) investment in new technologies and systems, the company’s largest-ever single investment in Thailand. Part of the Ford+ plan for growth and value creation, the investment supports production of the next-gen Ranger pickup truck and Everest SUV.

The investment – Ford’s largest single outlay in Thailand – brings Ford’s cumulative investments in the country to more than $3.4 billion (THB 100 billion) over 25 years. The modernization program bolsters Thailand’s role as a global production and export base for Ford, through its wholly-owned Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) and joint-venture AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT) truck plant.

“This is an important milestone to build on our quarter-century of commitment to producing vehicles Thailand, enabling us to further modernize and upgrade our local operations, and support production for the exciting upcoming launch of the next-gen Ranger, one of Ford’s highest volume and most successful vehicles anywhere in the world, and the next-gen Everest SUV,” said Yukontorn ‘Vickie’ Wisadkosin, president, Ford ASEAN and Asia Pacific Distributors Markets.

Driving a promising future

The investment underscores Ford’s ongoing commitment to deliver world-class quality vehicles to customers in Thailand and around the world, while driving opportunities for local industry growth.

The addition of a second shift at FTM adds up to 1,250 incremental jobs, increasing Ford’s local workforce to more than 9,000 employees.

Ford also provided opportunities for its local supply chain partners with more than $400 million (THB 13 billion) invested in the supply chain network to localize and enhance the quality of vehicle parts and design related tools, creating approximately 250 incremental jobs.

Modernizing everywhere

The overall investment brings Ford’s manufacturing facilities in Thailand in line with the latest global efficiency, flexibility, and quality processes, through extensive upgrades and new state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and accompanying training for Ford employees and suppliers.

“This investment is a key enabler to help us deliver Ford+, our company strategy to help us deliver must-have, world-class quality vehicles that our customers love,” said Andrea Cavallaro, operations director, International Markets Group and South America.

The company is almost doubling the number of robots at both FTM and AAT, with the addition of 356 state-of-the-art robots at the body shop and paint shop. This brings the level of automation at the body shop at FTM and AAT from 34 percent to 80 percent and 69 percent, respectively. Ford’s manufacturing workforce will work seamlessly with high-tech equipment and tools to enhance manufacturing efficiency and quality and continue to improve overall customer satisfaction.

As part of the investment, Ford is the first auto manufacturer to implement ScanBox technology in Southeast Asia. This latest surface scan capability improves the time used to accurately measure the whole vehicle by five times during the assembly process, helping Ford to increase efficiency in problem solving for better quality control.

Ford also has increased its production capability for multi-variant truck production in FTM. By increasing model flexibility, the plant can produce multiple cab styles – single cab, open cab and double cab – on the same production line. This allows more flexibility in planning and scheduling so the plant can react more quickly to customer demand and reduce customer waiting time for a new vehicle.

In addition, FTM and AAT are making significant efforts to support environmentally friendly initiatives, including using renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions, and practicing zero waste to landfill.

Creating must-have products and services

Ranger and Everest are Ford’s most successful vehicles in Thailand, and the company continues to improve its offering with the recently revealed Thai-built next-gen Ranger.  Built at both FTM and AAT, and due to be launched in mid-2022, the next-gen Ranger – the smartest, most versatile and capable Ranger yet – will benefit from the advanced technologies and modernized systems in place.

BANGKOK, Thailand, October 25, 2022 – Thanks to advanced lighting technology in the next-gen Ford Everest, night driving can be less stressful. For instance, Ford’s Matrix LED headlamps with glare-free high beams can be used without the risk of dazzling other road users while providing increased visibility.

We might only spend 25 percent of our time driving at night, yet experts suggest the risk of being in a fatal crash is three times higher than during the day. Because drivers typically underuse their high beam headlamps at night, and even under ideal conditions the risks of driving at night are far greater than during the day.

“Ford’s glare-free high beam helps maximize the use of high beam, meaning drivers can see significantly more of the road ahead – without causing any distraction to other road users,” said Andrew Kok, senior technical engineer.

Here’s how they work: These advanced headlights use the vehicle’s forward-facing camera, which can detect head or taillights up to 800 meters away, to monitor the road. The system creates a light tunnel that tracks the vehicle even when driving through a bend keeping it ‘in the dark while all around it the high beam lighting provides optimum illumination of the road.

“Low beam lights generally reach out to around 70 meters but high beam reaches out to around 200 meters,” Kok said. “Being able to drive with high beam on but not dazzle other road users means next-gen Everest offers owners maximum illumination of the road, giving them a feeling of additional security.”

Plus, the next-gen Everest’s Matrix LED headlamps with glare-free high beams have an extra trick in the form of High Beam Boost, which uses a cluster of dormant LEDs to offer 30 percent more light than just Matrix LED high beam alone.

“Being able to provide an extra high beam hit of light is one of the features on next-gen Everest that we’re really proud of, and we know those customers who do a lot of long-distance driving will really appreciate it,” said Kok.

Using high beam headlamps where appropriate is a major benefit for visibility because the light itself is angled to project further down the road, said Kok. Low beam headlamps are angled towards the road to illuminate the area directly in front of the vehicle for use in areas where there’s greater ambient lighting, like other road users or street lighting.

“Because high beam headlamps are angled up and offer a longer beam compared to low beam, you’re able to spot things on the road in front of you, or to the side long before you would if you were just driving with low beam lights alone. This means you can react to situations much sooner,” said Kok.

And because not all roads are straight, next-gen Everest offers Dynamic Bending Lights (low beam), which use sensors to measure vehicle speed and steering angle to swivel the headlamps into a bend allowing the driver to see more of the road ahead compared to conventional, non-bending lights. Next-gen Everest’s headlamps can swivel by up to 15 degrees, which is enough to illuminate most hairpin bends, improving the driver’s visibility.

Next-gen Everest also offers static bending lights for additional illumination around town, and they activate at low speeds when the vehicle is making a sharp turn. But the static bending lights don’t just help when turning a corner, they also activate when reverse gear is selected to provide additional illumination when reversing at night.

“A lot of thought and development went into next-gen Everest’s Matrix LED headlamps with glare-free high beam to ensure drivers see more of the road ahead without dazzling other road users,” concluded Kok.

March 21, 2022 – The Ford Ranger has built a reputation around the world for being a tough and capable pickup, with more and more customers trusting it to deliver years of dependable service for both work and play.

Ford has continued to strengthen customer trust in the Ranger by listening to owners and delivering on features that matter to them most. Next-gen Ranger takes this to the next level with a truck that offers customers exceptional towing and hauling, incredible off-road capability, and a choice of durable and fuel-efficient engines.

“The Ford product development team’s goal with the next-gen Ranger was to deliver a vehicle that met the needs of customers in more than 180 different markets and be the one truck the world trusts to tackle anything,” said Graham Pearson, vehicle program director for Ranger.

“And to be that one truck the world trusts, next-gen Ranger had to excel in several key areas: stance and stability, towing, off-road capability, performance, and drivability.”

“Ford knows trucks,” he added. “We want to give our customers greater levels of performance and capability, expand Ford’s credibility on the worksite, and offer the most desirable lifestyle pickup with more distinct styling, advanced technology, and comfort.”

Powertrains for Work, Family, and Play

Whether a customer’s priority is fuel economy, refinement, towing, or hauling the powertrains chosen for next-gen Ranger will provide customers with the best performance and capability, according to Pritika Maharaj, Ranger and Everest program manager.

The headline grabber is the addition of Ford’s proven 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, which is being offered on both Ranger and the Everest SUV. “We’re offering this engine specifically because some customers told us they wanted more power and torque for towing and extreme off-roading,” said Maharaj.

Making up to 184 kW of power at 3,250 rpm and 600 Nm of torque from 1,750-2,250 rpm in both Ranger and Everest, Ford engineers treated the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel like a brand-new engine. “We did a lot of application calibration and validation work in both the US and Australia to make sure it would meet the needs of Ranger and Everest customers,” said Maharaj.

“The 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel delivers,” added Maharaj. “When you drive a Ranger with the V6 turbodiesel, it feels like a much bigger truck. And it feels strong in the sense that it’s got plenty of power and torque, which is exactly what our customers told us they wanted.”

But the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel also is strong in the literal sense of the word with the compacted graphite iron (CGI) block around 75 percent stronger and 75 percent stiffer than the iron used in traditional engine blocks.

In addition to the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine, the next-gen Ranger will continue to offer the choice of the proven Single-Turbo and the Bi-Turbo 2.0 inline four-cylinder diesels.

The Single Turbo comes in two different performance levels, offering 110 kW at 3,500 rpm and 350 Nm from 1,750-2,750 rpm and 125 kW at 3,500 rpm and 405 Nm from 1,750-2,500 rpm.

Ford’s proven 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo makes 155 kW at 3,750 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,750-2,000 rpm and will continue to be available in Everest as well. This engine boasts a clever bypass system that determines the optimum operating mode, meaning the turbochargers can operate in series (at lower engine speeds for enhanced torque and responsiveness) or the smaller turbo can be bypassed allowing the larger turbocharger to deliver high power.

In addition, the next-gen Ranger and Everest in Middle East markets will be available with the tried-and-tested 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine that underpins a range of Ford global products and

is a perfect choice for customers who prefer petrol propulsion. This engine makes 222 kW at 5,900 rpm and 452 Nm at 3,350 rpm.

“We know our customers push their Rangers to the extreme, so that’s how we test them,” Maharaj said. “We push them to the limit initially on dynos, where they get exposed to extreme loads, temperatures, and aggressive duty cycles. Then we test the vehicle in markets from the frigid cold areas of Europe and New Zealand to the hot humid markets of Southeast Asia.

“Whether it’s our 3.0-liter V6, 2.0-litre Single-Turbo, Bi-Turbo, or 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol, we simulate extreme customer usage by running these engines for more than 700 continuous hours at full throttle. That’s like going around the world six times at full throttle. And we do that in temperatures ranging from    -40 degrees Celsius to more than 50 degrees Celsius,” she said.

Transmission choices include a 10-speed auto that also sees service in the Ford F-150 and F-150 Raptor and has notched up more than six million kilometers of testing, including more than 3,900 km of sanctioned off-road racing, including at the Baja 1000. This transmission will be available on the 3.0-liter V6 and 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo engines, across Ranger and Everest, while the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine in Ranger and Everest will share its 10-speed automatic transmission with the Ford Ranger Raptor.

The current six-speed automatic transmission available on Ranger will continue along with the introduction of a new five- and six-speed manual transmission for Single Turbo diesel variants. The new manual transmission was four years in development across four continents and boasts a new gear set for smoother shifts.

Ready for the Road Less Travelled

“Our customers told us that one of the reasons they love Ranger is because it’s one of the best vehicles on the road for ride comfort and car-like performance. So, retaining that and balancing it with off-road performance has been key throughout the development of next-generation Ranger,” said Rob Hugo, dynamic experiences supervisor, Ranger.

A 50mm track and wheelbase increase for next-gen Ranger has improved vehicle stability on- and off-road, said Hugo. It has also improved the front approach angle to 30 degrees (up from 28.5 degrees in the prior model) and the rear departure angle to 23 degrees (up from 21 degrees in the prior model). The latter is the same when a towbar is fitted due to packaging improvements.

Further to the track increase which helped the team increase the width of the next-gen Ranger’s tray for a more versatile load space, the rear dampers were moved outboard of the springs which makes for a more controlled ride whether the vehicle is laden or not.

“The outboard dampers have allowed us to tune a more controlled ride whether the vehicle is carrying a heavy load or not and solve a common complaint of pickups with inboard mounted dampers that they can bounce or skip when unladen,” Hugo said.

Whether you’re a traditionalist or someone looking for additional peace of mind on the road, Ford is offering two four-wheel-drive systems for next-gen Ranger. The base four-wheel drive is a ‘part-time’ system with a two-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case offering 2H, 4H, and 4L as modes of operation. Next-gen Ranger is also available with an on-demand four-wheel-drive system (2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L) which allows Ranger to be driven in four-wheel drive on high-traction surfaces via its 4A (automatic) mode. When selected, the system continuously distributes power between the front and rear axles for optimum performance in all on-road conditions.

“This means a Ranger driver can just leave the truck in four-wheel drive (4A) and head off down the highway, down a country road, over a snowy mountain, or across a sand dune without having to do anything else,” Hugo said.

Next-gen Ranger continues to be offered with an electronic rear differential lock which can be activated via the SYNC® screen. A differential-lock allows both wheels on a specific axle to turn at the same speed providing additional traction when you’re off-roading.

Selectable Drive Modes for Added Confidence on the Go

It used to be that only Ranger Raptor offered selectable drive modes, but now next-gen Ranger will offer up to six, depending on the variant and market. The modes are: Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul (auto only), Slippery for on-road, and Mud/Ruts and Sand for use off-road. These modes adjust everything from the gearshift to throttle response, traction and stability controls, ABS, and more.

“These selectable drive modes are a very simple way of getting advanced traction to the wheels the way it needs to be delivered without having to be an expert,” said Hugo.

Tow / Haul mode is a brand-new drive mode and is designed for those towing or carrying a heavy load in their Ranger. Selecting Tow / Haul mode optimizes the gear shift timing to maintain power when you’re climbing up a hill or deliver the right amount of engine braking when you’re traveling down a hill. Next-gen Ranger continues with a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg with a 350 kg tow ball download limit.

Continuing the towing theme, the next-gen Ranger – depending on the model and market – now features an integrated electric trailer brake controller, trailer connection checklist, and trailer light check to simplify the process of hooking up your trailer. For added peace of mind, Ranger’s BLIS® driver assistance technology will also allow for drivers to program the size of their trailer for added coverage of their blind spots.

In addition to the selectable drive modes, the next-gen Ranger boasts a dedicated off-road screen on the SYNC infotainment system. At the press of a button, owners can access the off-road SYNC screen, which shows driveline and diff lock settings, steering angle, vehicle pitch, and roll angles, as well as a front camera view with predictive overlay guidelines.

Capabilities On Demand

More user-focused than ever, next-gen Ranger features six upfitter switches on the overhead console to make after-market customization easy. The six pre-wired switches are connected to the power distribution box, and each circuit is individually fused from 10A to 30A allowing for the connection of a range of accessories.

But that’s not all. To further help customers, the vehicle has been pre-wired with circuits placed around the vehicle in locations commonly used for the fitment of aftermarket equipment, with two sets of blunt cut sealed circuits under the hood (near the radiator support and the fuse box) and one at the rear of the truck, close to the trailer hitch.

There’s also a dedicated space under the bonnet for the installation of a second battery for use as an auxiliary power source to keep camping accessories running.

To protect vital components when you’re off-road, the next-gen Ranger boasts a raft of protective underbody shields for the steering, sump, transmission, and transfer case. These shields are made from pressed and folded laser-cut steel. The recessed mounting bolts are protected from damage and easy to remove for servicing, and because the shields are bolted directly to the chassis they add to the structural integrity of the vehicle.

The next-gen Ranger is adventure-ready with rooftop load limits of 350 kg static and 85 kg dynamic. And a range of cargo management solutions in the load box makes next-gen Ranger the most versatile ever, from adjustable cleats on each side to tray-mounted tie-downs and styled box rails, tailgate clamp pockets, and box capping with six structural mounting points for after-market accessories. Depending on the variant and market, the payload runs from 925 kg to 1,191 kg.

Like the current Ranger, the next-gen Ranger offers a maximum water wading depth of 800 mm at 7 km/h.

“Many of our customers take their Rangers through water – rivers, creeks, and so forth. So, we give Ranger a bath at various speeds, at ever-increasing water depths up to 800 mm,” Hugo said.

“The physical testing is on top of the extensive computer-aided engineering work the team does to ensure the aerodynamics of the vehicle work as well in water as they do on the road, and to ensure water doesn’t get into anything we don’t want it to, and that all the critical systems work on the vehicle afterward, as the lights and horn. We also conduct our water wading tests in reverse gear too, because that’s what people do in real life.”

Tested to the Extremes

The next-gen Ford Ranger has undergone millions of kilometers of testing in 10 different countries to ensure it meets or exceeds customer standards for capability, quality, reliability, and durability.

As well, the Ford Ranger prototypes clocked up thousands of kilometers at Ford’s You Yangs Proving Ground testing facility near Melbourne, where durability testing continued 24/7 on specific components, like the suspension, body structure, and powertrains.

John Willems, the chief program engineer for the next-gen Ranger, said that well before any physical testing occurred, Ford made extensive use of computer-aided simulations during the development of the pickup. This was to optimize critical components and systems to restrict pathways of structurally borne and airborne road noise from entering the cabin.

“Early in the development of next-gen Ranger, a lot of testing was done analytically, using computer software,” Willems explained. “After this, we built 200 prototype Rangers to undergo a raft of really challenging tests, from the dust-choked Australian Outback and arid Middle East to the humid streets and highways of Thailand as well as sub-zero temperatures in Europe and North America.

“We replicated the exact conditions our customers may encounter with Ranger, to ensure that when the new Ford Ranger leaves the showroom, it can tackle almost any situation both on and off-road,” Willems said. “This includes extreme humidity in Thailand, cold weather in New Zealand, and 50-degree temperatures that customers encounter in the Middle East.”

Apart from testing the whole vehicle in real-world environments, specific testing drilled down into each component, from suspension, towbars, frames, doors, tailgates, body panels, bumpers, seats, and anything else the customer can feel, touch, push or slam. All were tested to the point of destruction in a controlled environment to uncover any potential weak points.

“The purpose of testing and stressing all of these components is to make sure they’re built to deliver safe and dependable service throughout the life of the vehicle,” Willems said. “We know our customers cover thousands of kilometers in their Rangers, often in extreme conditions, so we need to ensure the pickup is a safe, cossetting and quiet environment for them.”

CLAYCOMO, Mo., Feb. 8, 2022 – Ford E-Transit, the electric version of America’s best-selling commercial van1 and the first of two all-electric vehicles purpose-built for Ford Pro commercial customers, is now shipping across the U.S. The popular E-Transit already has more than 10,000 orders from businesses of all sizes and Ford is working on ways to increase production.

Increasing electric vehicle production to meet customer demand

E-Transit is part of Ford’s more than $30 billion investment in electrification through 2025. It is Ford’s most recent electric vehicle, following Mustang Mach-E. F-150 Lightning and F-150 Lightning Pro deliveries begin this spring.

By the end of next year, Ford will have the global capacity to produce 600,000 battery-electric vehicles annually, which includes 200,000-plus Mustang Mach-E SUVs and 150,000 F-150 Lightning trucks. Ford is now working on ways to increase E-Transit production.

Demand is strong, with more than 300 customers placing orders for 10,000-plus E-Transit vans. Businesses of all sizes are ordering E-Transit – from small operations like Sheeran Construction in Aston, Pennsylvania, to municipalities like the city of Orlando, Fla., to some of the nation’s largest service providers and retailers like Walmart.

“I completely trust Ford and I am confident the E-Transit will withstand the rigors of my work,” said Ryan Sheeran, owner of Sheeran Construction and a soon-to-be E-Transit owner. “I am looking forward to owning my first all-electric vehicle.”

Built for America

To deliver E-Transit vans to customers like Sheeran, Ford invested $100 million in Kansas City Assembly Plant and added approximately 150 full-time jobs. These jobs include vehicle and battery pack assembly for the new E-Transit.

“When asked if I wanted to work on the new E-Transit, I was one of the first to raise my hand and volunteer,” said John Dodd, a UAW-Ford operator who holds one of the 150 new jobs at the plant. “I’m ready to see the E-Transit on the roads, to see it make an actual impact on local businesses. The new jobs further expand Ford’s commitment to manufacturing in the U.S.; Ford employs more U.S. hourly workers and assembles more vehicles in America than any other automaker.

Bold Design Captures Raptor Family DNA In Next-Gen Ranger Raptor

Take a sneak peek behind the Ford Design curtain and learn, in 90 seconds, what it takes to go from a scribble on a sketch pad to Ford’s most powerful Ranger ever – the next-generation Ranger Raptor.

Hundreds of sketches, thousands of kilos of clay, and hundreds of litres of paint. We think of new cars being built by sophisticated machines on massive production lines, but the first step in the process begins with artisans.

Like everything, the design of the next-gen Ranger Raptor began with a brief. This brief forms the backbone of the design, it confirms the inspiration and must-haves in the design.

Once the creative brief is locked, the designers begin sketching and it “always starts with a pencil and paper,” said Dave Dewitt, exterior design manager, Ranger Raptor. Once the sketches are approved, “and there are hundreds of them,” according to Dewitt, the digital design team recreates them virtually as both a master reference document and to feed into the next step, clay modeling.

Using more than 4000kg of clay, 1/3 scale models and then full-size models are carved first by machines before the finishing touches are made by master sculptors. The design chiefs approve the clay design and it is ‘frozen’. Clay modellers also sculpt life-sized models of steering wheels, dashboards, and seats.

While the clay modellers are working, the colour and materials team start selecting the fabrics, textures, and colours to help emphasise the look and feel of the next-gen Ranger Raptor while conforming with the design DNA of the vehicle. Interior design works to ensure the Raptor’s interior feels like a cockpit but is also as practical as can be.

While the various teams are working on the interior and exterior the design engineering team goes beneath the surface to ensure the good looks are more than just skin deep.

The end result, after lots of hard work, much of it hand built by a team of talented creatives and craftspeople, is the next-gen Ranger Raptor.

Performance at a glance

The next-gen Ranger Raptor wraps its performance chassis in a bold and aggressive exterior that not only takes Ranger to the next level, but screams Ford Performance and clearly links it to the rest of the Raptor family.

“Our design brief for Ranger Raptor was to really lean into ‘form following function’ and take Ranger to the next level,” said Max Tran, chief designer, Ranger Raptor.

The team was tasked with telling the story of Ranger Raptor through its design, Dewitt added.

“With just a glance you had to get a clear picture of Ranger Raptor’s power, performance, and capability but also recognise it was part of the Ford Performance and Raptor families,” he said.

Raptor vehicles are the pinnacle of off-road performance and while each model has its own personality they need to contain Raptor-family design cues. These include bold F-O-R-D lettering stretching across the blacked-out grille with Matrix LED headlights that stretch fender to fender, durable steel front and rear bumpers built for rigorous off-roading, high-strength steel bash plate, functional hood and side vents, and wide fenders.

Ranger Raptor contains all of those elements and further differentiates itself from next-gen Ranger with a pumped hood dome hinting at the power underneath, twin exhaust tips tucked up high to avoid obstacles, and precision grey accents.

“With our design, we ensured the Ranger Raptor stood alone as its own vehicle, not just next to Ranger but also in the Raptor family,” said Dewitt.

“You can park them all side by side and see the things that make them different but also the elements that tie them to one another.”

Performance-oriented interior

According to Nick Eterovic, interior design manager, Ranger Raptor, the interior of the Ranger Raptor had to provide customer with the confidence to unlock the high-performance capability of the next-gen Raptor.

“Our design team had to deliver a commanding cabin with the function of a high-performance off-road race truck with the comfort and convenience of a modern sports car,” said Eterovic.

Ranger Raptor’s cabin is as expressive as the exterior with Ford Performance Code Orange splashes throughout. Covering the instrument panel and the top of the door panels is Terra Suede which is soft yet tough and easy to clean. Its matte finish reduces glare and adds to the premium, performance vibe of the interior.

Unique to the next-gen Ranger Raptor, Ford Performance seats take their inspiration from the seats inside the F-22 Raptor jet fighter with grippy side bolstering designed to keep you in place no matter the terrain. The seat materials too have been developed to have both a functional and aesthetic appeal with a newly developed ‘super matte’ seat trim, accented with suede. And because the next-gen Ranger Raptor allows you to transport friends and family, the rear seats of Ranger Raptor have been designed to be as grippy and supportive as those in the front.

“Jet fighter seats need to be supportive both side to side and up and down,” said Eterovic. “We spent a lot of time looking at key details of the F-22 seats and how we could incorporate them into the Ranger Raptor’s seat design. And we wanted to make sure those in the back were just as comfortable as those in the front.”

Owners get a commanding cockpit feel with a new-design premium-grade leather steering wheel with a thick rim and thumb rests set off with an orange marker on the top of the rim, and magnesium paddles for manual gear shifts. The Ranger Raptor-specific My Mode button allow owners to select Normal, Sport, and Bajai modes for the steering, suspension, and exhaust (you can also select Quiet to ensure you stay on the good side of your neighbours).

Bringing the whole interior together is Ford’s new-to-Raptor configurable information-on-demand 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, which has bespoke start-up animations befitting the pickup’s performance character. Complementing the digital cluster is a 12-inch portrait-style centre touchscreen running Ford’s latest-generation SYNCÒ 4Aii infotainment system.

“Next-gen Ranger Raptor is as bold and expressive on the inside as it is outside. From the digital instrument cluster, fingertip access to customisable suspension, exhaust and steering modes, to the heavily-bolstered seats, dedicated off-road screen on the touchscreen, and the Code Orange accents Ranger Raptor is designed for action out of the box,” said Eterovic.
